Together for the legal recognition of German Sign Language (DGS)
Support Mr Steffen Helbing in his commitment to inclusion, accessibility and equal opportunities – through the Happiness Verein Berlin.
Dear friends and supporters,
My name is Mr Steffen Helbing.
For more than 16 years I have been politically active, and for 31 years I have been volunteering in various associations to strengthen the rights, participation and visibility of people with disabilities.
My greatest passion is the Deaf community – people whose voice is expressed in sign language.
A major success has already been achieved:
The recognition of German Sign Language (DGS) as a minority language was included for the first time on 17 December 2024 in the CDU election programme.
This is a milestone – but our common path continues.
Our next goal is clear and determined:
The legal anchoring of DGS as a recognised minority language in Germany.
I am fully committed to this – in dialogue with Members of the German Bundestag, with various parties, Humboldt University of Berlin, experts in sign language and many dedicated people who believe in an inclusive society.
Together, we are fighting for the legal recognition of DGS as a minority language in Germany.
But this commitment needs support.
Today I am turning to you – to people with heart, to companies, to sponsors all over the world – to strengthen our work and achieve great things together.
Your support means:
- Visibility and appreciation for Deaf people
- Inclusion and easier access to political and social participation as well as accessibility
- Hope, dignity and equal opportunities for all
In addition, I maintain worldwide contacts with politicians, to advocate in personal conversations for the rights of Deaf people and the recognition of sign language.
With joy, respect and conviction, I represent these important concerns internationally and stand up wherever barriers need to be removed.
This path needs support, solidarity and people who believe in justice.
We therefore call on the global community, companies, foundations and private supporters to promote our work and become part of this important movement.
Let us make history together – for a world in which every language counts, every sign is understood and every heart is seen.
With deep gratitude, respect and hope,
Steffen Helbing
